Welcome to Koru Hub 2014

Kia ora, Ni Hao Koru Hub Families

Welcome back to school for 2014.  We hope you all had a lovely christmas and relaxing holiday break.

Who's Who in Koru Hub 2014
We begin the term with 46 Year 1 and 2 children.  A huge welcome to Lorenzo, Louise, Charlie, Caitlyn and Nikki who are joining us for their first day of school!

Our teachers are Demelza, Michael, Erica and Angela.

Arriving At School
Each day children need to be in school uniform and will need to bring:

  • School bag
  • Lunch box and drink bottle
  • School sun hat
  • Reading bag

When you arrive at school children will need to:

  • Take their shoes off and leave them on the shoe rack outside
  • Find their name on a cubby hole to put their bag in
  • Put their reading bag in the reading tray
  • Sign in on the touch screen
  • Say hello to everyone, find friends and start playing!
  • When the bell rings children can farewell their parents and join us on the mat in karaka (suite with the orange carpet).

Parents are able to pick their children up from koru hub at 3pm. You are welcome to join us quietly inside or chat with other parents outside while you wait.  Please keep the hallway clear so we can move around easily during our tidy up.  We will set up routines to ensure the hub is tidy, children are packed up and have all their things ready to go home by 3pm.

Term 1 Planning Themes
Our inquiry this term is 'Living Locally'.  During term 1 Churton Park is holding a festival day and we will be having our own stalls/activities there.  In the first half of the term children will be developing an enterprising idea to help fundraise for our school.   In the second half of the term we will be researching the history of Churton Park.  In Term 2 artist Colin Gibbs will be our artist in residence.  He will be painting landscape pictures of Churton Park and children will be able to witness his progress throughout his painting.  What children find out from their research inquiry will be handed onto Colin to assist him in his painting of our local landscape. Our writing for the term will be integrated into this inquiry and is likely to cover brainstorming, plan and proposals, lists and reflections.  Inquiry based maths includes place value using money, addition/subtraction/multiplication strategies when dealing with money and calculating cost and profit

Koru Parents Information Session
On Wednesday 19 February at 6:30pm we will be holding an information session for all our parents of koru hub.  We will be explaining how it all works in our hub, our routines, learning programmes and home learning.  There will be an opportunity during this event for New Entrant parents to hear the specific information that relates to children who have just started school.  We will have an activity for the children to do while the parents are listening to us therefore everyone is welcome!

Koru Hub Family Shared Dinner
On Thursday 17 February we are going to hold a shared dinner for the families in our hub.  The purpose of this is for us to build relationship within the hub and for everyone to get to know each other.  We are going to make the most of this opportunity and have the children trial out their stalls for the Churton Park Festival. Families will be given 'funny money' to role play going to the festival.  Children will be able to work through running their stall and can then receive feedback on changes to make before the real thing.  We look forward to seeing lots of you at this fun and social evening!

Blogs and Planning Site
Please submit your email address to our school and hub blog so you get updates.  The school blog is our school newsletter. You will also find a link here to take you to our hub planning site.  It is new and improved and should be much easier to navigate than last year.  At our koru hub information session we will explain how our planning site works, our routines, what you can expect for home learning and how we run our learning programmes.
